Dog Boarding Gretton, Bailey an 11 month long haired white Chihuahua a cheeky spirited dog as sure footed as any cat. Bentley a 10 month old Pug, a very playful and eager-to-please little chap.
When Bailey and Bentley came to the Cotswold Dog Lodge for a look around from their Gretton home prior to a few days home boarding here, it was clear that the two toy breed dogs were going to settle in very easily. I had wondered if 1l month old Bailey might find the change of scenery a little daunting. Unfazed by the size of our large border collie, West the newcomers were soon bonding and the dogs spent the hour checking out the house and exploring the garden.
The Chihuahua is the worlds smallest dog breed and clearly an important test for our security. Kevin kept a close eye on the dogs when close to the perimeter fence to satisfy ourselves that Bailey would be safely contained when in the garden.
I had to laugh when the dog’s owner Terri, filled in our contract, writing under the heading for description of distinguishing marks and features, wrote ‘very flat face’ when describing Bentley
Upon arrival for the home stay Bentley and Bailey headed straight for the living room and leapt onto the back of the sofa to check out the view from the window. Within minutes they were wrestling and play-fighting which they did most evenings until separated for a little peace and quite.
The pair were a joy to walk on the farm walks and around the village. The pair easily kept up with West, pug Bentley ploughing through the longer grass while Bailey leapt through and over the tussocks. Off-lead, on the farm walks they kept close and had excellent recall which was very impressive for a couple of dogs not yet a year old.
When looking after dogs we need to be aware of both the dogs breed characteristics and also their personal foibles.
Pugs cannot tolerate high heat and humidity. Because of their short snouts they do not have the ability to cool themselves like other breeds through panting. So we had to ensure Bentley was not exercised in the heat of the day. We have a large garden and a favorite place of many of our guests is in the shade of the woodland area – Bentley was no exception.
The Chihuahua is a hardy little dog and Bailey was extremely agile. However, due to his minute size, he is more at risk of injury than larger breeds. Happily, West likes to be chased rather than do the chasing there was little risk of him bowling Bailey over.
